  • A winter night view from Qinngorput towards Nuuk in Greenland. By Mads Pihl

Nuuk and Reykjavík – a perfect combination for a holiday

Nuuk and Reykjavík sit at the top of the world like two kings on mighty thrones.

CAPITALS THAT COMPLEMENT

No need for epic battles here; year-round connections make it delightful to hop from one vibrant capital to the other.

Nuuk and Reykjavík, two Arctic metropolises, make the perfect combination for a city holiday in the great north. They complement each other as cultural centers standing on the cusp of their country’s robust nature – double proof that adventure runs wild inside city limits.

The closeness of Nuuk and Reykjavík facilitates their connection, but the individuality of these northernmost capitals compels it. One can only fully appreciate the cities’ distinctive characteristics after experiencing them in contrast. Reykjavík offers rejuvenation and wellness and a calendar full of events while Nuuk lures with fine dining and a surprisingly modern lifestyle.

REYKJAVÍK: PURE ENERGY

Reykjavík’s position in the center of the North Atlantic makes it an obvious stopping point for travelers jet setting around the world. But Reykjavík has long since surpassed transit hub status with its geothermal spas, museum exhibits and art openings, and luxury shopping.

Reykjavík’s energy radiates everywhere from the people in the shops to the sculptures along the water walkway. Even the building facades showcase the city’s flair as local artists totally redefine the word ‘graffiti’. Residents paint unique designs along their gardens walls, and every street corner reveals a life-size masterpiece in vivid detail.

NUUK: URBAN GREENLAND

From Reykjavík, hop on board a direct flight with Air Greenland or Air Iceland to venture west toward Nuuk, an urban city overflowing with Greenlandic authenticity. The cafés boasting Nordic gastronomy and the people cloaked in the latest fashions add to Nuuk’s cosmopolitan atmosphere. Colorful houses by the sea hint at Greenland’s traditional beginnings.

During the day, sightsee around Nuuk at museums and souvenir shops, stopping at sculptures spread around town like an open-air exhibit. Discover that the artwork and clothing incorporate symbols that honor a pioneering culture living close to nature.

At night, feast on the freshest Greenlandic delicacies like muskox and halibut while overlooking the Nuuk skyline. Their aromas are intoxicating, and the only thing that rivals their intense flavors of mountain and sea is the chef’s artistic presentation.

As you treat yourself to a nightcap made from wild crowberries picked in the nature just outside Nuuk think fondly on Nuuk and Reykjavík and a lovely holiday of city hopping in the Arctic.
