Upernavik - North Greenland

Upernavik Museum

In Upernavik’s old quarter you’ll find the world’s northernmost open-air museum.

The museum consists, among other things, of the old church, grocer’s shop, and all the original colonial buildings.

The administrator’s residence tells the cultural history of the area, and in the old shop, you can see an old, but completely intact, kayak and an old umiaq boat.

When hunting for whales or walruses, the umiaq was manned by men. However, when traveling, the boat was rowed by women, often with an older man at the helm.
