Restaurant H8 Explorer is a historical place in Disko Bay. The buildings are over 120 years old, and have been housing tourists in Oqaatsut for more than 20 years.

Restaurant H8 Explorer was originally build for Royal Greenlandic Trade back in the 1890’s. Today, the buildings are worthy of preservation and are protected. The name, H8, dates back to World War 2 where the Americans numbered all cities on one roof top, so they could navigate from the sky. In Oqaatsut, it was the building, that today houses our restaurant, that were marked with the letter and number “H8”.
Experiences offered at Restaurant H8 Explorer
There are truly a lot of history connected to this place, and in a more present context, the restaurant is very well liked in the local community, and has for years been a stopping point on boat tours, dogsled excursions and hiking trips.
Restaurant H8 Explorer is open from 1st of March to Mid April, where winter excursions such as dogsledding over the frozen bay, snowshoe hiking in remote and untouched parts of the nature, and the traditional icefishing is available for tourists from all over the world. Of course always contected with a fantastic meal at Restaurant H8.
During summer Restaurant H8 Explorer is center for various excursions as well; kayaking silently through the bay overlooking the enormous mountains, hiking along the shoreline from Ilulissat to Oqaatsut with view of the drifting icebergs in the Disko Bay all along, and historical and cultural walks in the settlement.
The restaurant is open for everybody passing by, and the focus is always on the treasures of Greenland’s nature served in a modern way.
