KANGERLUSSUAQ MUSEUM

The American headquarters is as it always was. It is as if the captain has just left his office. Kangerlussuaq Museum is an integral part of the Kangerlussuaq Airport, and is situated at the heart of the airport area.

It was from here that Base Commander directed operations from 1960 to 1962, and the airport’s years as an American base occupy much of the museum’s exhibits.

The museum gives a graphic account of the history of flying in Greenland before, during and after the Second World War. The museum also looks at the history and development of the area from the first Inuit summer camps to the present day.

The town of Kangerlussuaq was founded as an American airbase in 1941, but the area around the town has been used as hunting grounds for over 4,000 years. Many places around the town and deep into the hinterland have ruins, remains and traces of the region’s Inuit history.
