Tasermiut Fjord, a hidden gem in South Greenland, stretches over 70 kilometers, offering a landscape filled with unnamed peaks surrounded by a powerful aura. The fjord is a showcase of diverse panoramas, each with its own distinct personality. The curves of the hills turn into towering peaks and walls, while the mountains stand as guards.
The fjord entrance hosts Nuugaarsuk, a sheep farm nestled among planted forests. Actually, this is very special in Greenland, because there are no native trees.
As you venture deeper into the fjord, the landscape becomes harsher with rock walls. At the fjord’s terminus lies a spectacular glacier, framing the panorama of nature’s grandeur.
Some of the peaks are well-known to top level climbers who come here in the summer from around the world. One that really caught my eye was the mountain I’ve seen in photos, a 2,045-meter peak called Nalumasortoq. Without hesitation, I knew it was a must for me to experience it myself. The majestic wall in front of me was far more powerful than any photo I’d seen. “I have to come back here,” I thought, “and spend a couple of more days at the foot of that mountain”.

I have been told all my life that having a rifle on trips into the wilderness is a safety necessity. When you are outside the city in Greenland, although the chance is low, there is still a slight possibility of encountering a polar bear. If there is a local guide with you or easy access to a hut or a boat, you are in good hands. Our trip was several days and kilometers away from any huts or the farmhouse Nuugaarsuk, so a rifle was necessary. Additionally, locals informed us that there had been sightings of a polar bear and muskoxen in the area around that time.

During summer in Tasermiut, the land bursts with colors – winter on the other hand, is a powerful monochrome and the colors burst in the sky, the low sun paints the sky different colors every day.
Waking up to a chilly morning, it can be hard to come out of the warm sleeping bag. Get up and unzip the tent, wake up to the sunrise complimenting the clouds, giving them peachy orange and pink colors. And you are ready for the day!
Our goal was to hike towards Suikkassuaq and Nalumasortoq. Hiking early towards our destination, with such a beautiful sight of the mountain in front of us with the colors of the sunrise was breathtaking.

It was mid March when we had three incredible days in Tasermiut. At this point of the season, you can start to smell the late winter – the crispy cold fresh air and the smell of the ground, which starts to emerge from the snow that is slowly fading.
When we started to hike on our first morning, the surface of the snow was hard after a chilly night, freezing the top layer of the snow that had been melted from the sun the day before. This makes it easier to hike on the snow.
We heard the distinctive sound of a rock ptarmigan from the distance. “Where is it?”, it’s not easy to spot the snow-white bird. Sitting down for lunch and scanning the landscape, we finally found them. “There they are”. We saw a couple of them. There were no signs of an Arctic hare, but they should be around too.

It feels like we are following the sun. This morning we walked into the sunrise and now, we are turning around to return to the campsite, the view suddenly changes. The sun is setting over the beautiful panorama of the other side of the Tasermiut fjord, with jagged peaks stretching down to the bottom of the fjord.
Even as winter winds down, there’s a chance to witness the ethereal northern lights. Away from city lights, the stars shine brighter, making stargazing by a warm bonfire an experience to cherish after a day of hiking.
