Every year at the height of the short, intense summer in East Greenland scores of people from the surrounding communities travel to the region’s main town Tasiilaq to take part in a two week coastal football championship.
The games are as much a social event as it is a matter of who wins local bragging rights for a year and a ticket to the national championships at the end of the season. Families reunite, friends compete against each other, and hundreds of people surround the gravel pitch and use the rocky ground as grandstands.

Families reunite, friends compete against each other, and hundreds of people surround the gravel pitch and use the rocky ground as grandstands.
Less than 3,000 people live in the region, and when entire generations of men and women relocate from a village to Tasiilaq for parts of the summer you start to understand how important the footballing event is.
So if you are in the area in late July be sure to plan for a day or two spent in the company of singing, shouting, happy football supporters and mix your hiking, kayaking, climbing, and village adventures with a bit of local summer fun in East Greenland.
