Greenland – a photographer’s dream come true

Photographers Karim and Maria Sahai explain why everyone who is interested in photography and nature should visit Greenland.

Karim and Maria Sahai are professional photographers passionate about the Arctic, nature, and culture of the North. They’ve been organising photography tours to Norway, Svalbard, Iceland and Greenland. Greenland is one of their favourite places on the planet, not only for its pure and raw beauty, but also for the many opportunities it gives them and their clients to grow as photographers. Here’s what they have to share!

Unique photos guaranteed

We always say that Greenland will take your photography to the next level. And it doesn’t matter if you are an amateur or a professional.

Greenland is for everyone. It’s almost impossible to take bad pictures here. There are so many photographic opportunities on every corner: mighty icebergs, colourful houses, incredible fjords, fluffy dogs; and don’t forget about the northern lights in winter and the breathtaking midnight sun in summer.

The ever-changing ice and special light conditions guarantee that you will come back home with some unique photos.

Not only will your pictures be different from other photographers’, but you can revisit the same locations and get different results every time.

Greenland will take your photography to the next level. And it doesn’t matter if you are an amateur or a professional.

Adventure is everywhere

But get ready, Greenland will give you very little time to relax. Even getting from one place to another is an adventure, and you better be always ready to snap a shot! When travelling by boat, always keep an eye for icebergs, seals, birds, and of course, whales. A simple hike near your overnight accommodation might result in a surprising encounter with a deer or a muskox. One of our favourite means of transportation is an airplane. Make sure you get yourself a window seat when flying over the incredible landscapes of Greenland. Note, that on many domestic flights you can’t reserve a seat in advance, so it’s a good idea to line up for boarding at the airport so that you can witness the Greenland Ice Sheet from the sky.

Time to take a nap!

If you happen to travel to Greenland in summer, we have another important tip for you – take naps during the day. What does it have to do with photography? Everything! Because you are so far up North, the sun doesn’t set below the horizon and the nights are bright. This is the time when you want to be awake and out taking pictures.

4 tips for photographers

  • Have plenty of camera batteries and always keep them charged;

  • It’s better to carry the batteries close to your body (inside pockets of your jacket), as even in summer it can get pretty cold and the batteries will discharge quicker if exposed;

  • Bring along an external hard drive, better two, for an extra back up. The chances are high that you will be taking a great amount of images. To make sure they come back home with you, back them up as often as you can;

  • Make sure you have a wide angle, mid range and a long lens with you. The latter is the best way to capture the surreal textures of icebergs. If you don’t own a telephoto lens, it’s definitely worth renting one for the trip.

Greenland teaches you to be always on alert and, at the same, to relax and take in the stunning natural beauty around you. Whatever your expectations are, Greenland will exceed them tenfold!
