  • A typical view of Kangaamiut - a village in Greenland

A chill summer In Kangaamiut

More than 60 small villages are scattered along the coastline and they are deeply connected with their surroundings.

Greenland has more than 60 small villages scattered along its more than 44,000 kilometers of mountainous coastline, and each one of these communities are deeply connected with their surroundings. We like to say that the sea, the sky, and the land are the building blocks of everyday village life, and few places embody this as well as Kangaamiut. A little more than 250 people inhabit this village at the mouth of the Eternity Fiord, one of Greenland’s most impressive fiordscapes with steep, towering peaks and hanging glaciers flanking a rich body of fishing waters used by locals through centuries.

... few places embody this as well as Kangaamiut.

Mecca for heliskiers

In winter this is a favorite spot for heliskiers looking to combine virgin terrain with a community experience, but it is the long summer evenings, the cultural exchange with locals, the local food, and the quiet rhythm of life in the village which is the real attraction for most casual adventure travelers who come to Kangaamiut.

Kangaamiut is where you meet the locals

Serviced by Arctic Umiaq Line’s coastal ferry and accessible by passenger boat from the town Maniitsoq, Kangaamiut is big enough to spend more than a day exploring. You probably just have to accept that some of that exploring will be done together with local kids who love to show people around and hang out near visitors, even if they might keep a respectful distance and only engage in conversation if you slow down and take your time with them.
