Greenland roads found in the clouds

Greenland roads found in the clouds

Cities and settlements are knit through an invisible network of airline routes that crisscross over the Ice Cap and along the coast lines.

THE ROADS OF GREENLAND ARE IN THE CLOUDS

There are no roads connecting towns in Greenland. Instead, cities and settlements are tightly knit through an invisible network of fast airline routes that crisscross over the Ice Sheet and along the coast lines. This net of routes is vital; they are the blood veins in the body that is Greenland. They bring the world to Greenland and Greenland to the world and they link the Greenlandic people, one with another, as well.

From the urban heart of the city you can reach the untamed wilderness on foot within minutes.

THE CONNECTOR

Compared to the kayaks of old, the women’s boats and whale hunting ships arriving in the fiords – the net of airline routes eliminates the enormous distances in Greenland and shortens journeys.  Besides moving people and cargo, local and global trends spread rapidly with the interaction of another invisible net, the internet, which connects all of us on the planet. The regular flights ensure that diversity, life and action are brought to otherwise isolated Greenlandic cities.

THE URBAN WILDERNESS

You can get your latté, cortado or Americano the way you like it at the trendy cafes, go shopping, enjoy modern cuisine and experience international artists and performers. Due to the “roads in the clouds” an urban experience is a given even this far north on the planet. While urban experiences are easy to get any place in the world, it’s the uniqueness of Greenland’s cities and the contrast of nature right outside the doorstep that makes this place remarkable.

"FLIGHT FRESH” OR “FRESH BY AIR”

Greenlanders have their own phrase for everything new and fresh that is brought in by air, such as fresh vegetables and milk from Denmark. The phrase in Danish is “flyfrisk” which best translates as “flight fresh” or “fresh by air”. The phrase is also applied to newcomers who arrive in a steady stream adding to the diversity in the cities, towns and settlements. If you are referred to as “flight fresh” or “fresh by air” it simply means that you are a new arrival and new in town. Every local person is familiar with the phrase which is yet another indication of the importance of the “roads in the clouds”.

Air Greenland is Greenland’s principal airline.

They offer aircraft and flights to, from and within Greenland.

Their fleet consists of 35 fixed-wing aircrafts and helicopters.
