Nuuk Art Museum

The art museum have renowned artists showing Greenland's heritage as well as giving room for new artists to exhibit what's to come.

NUUK art MUSEUM

In 2005 the art museum of Nuuk opened in the old Adventist Church of Nuuk. The museum holds the private art collection and handicrafts of the late contractor Svend Junge. The atmosphere of the small yellow wooden building with a tower is an intensified history of Greenland.

The impressive large sized coloured portrayals of nature made with oil paint and golden frames by Emanuel A. Petersen are closely hanging on the walls, surrounding figurines of soapstone and tupilak‘s carved in tooth. The show rooms are well filled with tools, some of higher artistic quality than others, but that does not matter.

Because the museum is so packed one easily gets the sensation of walking in a treasury. The much visual information stimulates the senses.

It is possible to see how nature has spellbound the man from outside, cf. Emanuel A. Pedersen’s grandiose landscape paintings. At the same time it is possible to see what one should have been aware of, cf. the traditional belief in spirits that resulted in the use of amulets and other magical appurtenance.

All of this is displayed without much explanation in the art museum of Nuuk. There is not any hard text about this and that.

That is why the museum is a place to explore and think. And perhaps even learn about history in a new and alternative way.
